Project Description

Behavior-based HEC mitigation: combining tactical and homemade strategies

The communities neighboring the Nkala Game Management Area near Kafue National Park
experience high levels of human-elephant conflict (HEC) due to its proximity to wildlife. As
traditional HEC mitigation methods have been unsuccessful, this project aims to use operant
conditioning to reinforce low cost ‘homemade’ deterrent methods improving their effectiveness
and reducing risk of habituation. Educating local farmers on these new methods will foster
greater cooperation between farmers and wildlife authorities and result in the decrease in
retribution killing of elephants. It will also help to provide community support for the release of
orphaned elephants from Game Rangers International’s Elephant Release Facility located 20 km
from these communities.
