Mobile Anti-poaching teams of Northern Rangelands Trust Conservancies, Kenya

IEF is supporting the 9-1 and 9-2 Joint Anti-Poaching Teams which are armed rangers that protect the wildlife and communities of Northern Rangelands Trust, the gold standard of community conservancy programs. The diversion of government security agencies attention and the economic impact of COVID-19 has led to an upsurge of crime, making the operation of these anti-poaching teams even more essential to protect and maintain the significant gains made towards wildlife protection and improvement of community livelihoods over the years. These teams patrol the Ewaso Nyiro Ecosystem which is home to the second largest concentration of elephants in Kenya where they face a high prevalence of illegal firearms, an active network of poachers, cattle rustling, and road banditry. The continued deployment of security forces helps both wildlife and the communities that comprise the conservancies.
