Community-based human elephant conflict mitigation in Pumat National Park

Pumat National Park is a priority area for conservation of wild Asian elephant in Vietnam, yet elephants often venture out of the National Park and into the buffer zone that contains plantations of industrial trees, fruit-bearing plants, crops and villages. The resulting human-elephant conflict has caused loss of crops and human life, damaging community support for elephant conservation and causing retaliatory killing. Community Elephant Protection Teams (CEPT) learned elephant monitoring and conflict mitigation techniques which, along teaching these techniques to communities, built community support for conservation and changed the adversarial relationships locals have with elephants.
