Project Description

Conservation Action Plan for the Garo Hills Elephant Reserve, India

The Garo Hills Elephant Reserve, created in 2001, has never developed an intergrated conservation action plan for elephants despite the fact that both elephant numbers and habitat have been in continous decline for the past twenty-five years.

This project will assist the Meghalaya Forest Department consolidate existing census and research information on elephants in the Garo Hills through consultation with stakeholders, identify conservation needs and knowledge gaps, and produce a Conservation Action Plan for Garo Hills Elephant Reserve.

IEF support will procure remote sensing imagery and produce maps that will be the basis for site specific management actions detailed in the action plan.
