Project Description

Conserving Elephant During and Beyond COVID-19 Pandemic in Aceh (Conservation Response Units (CRUs) ), Indonesia

Aceh Province in Sumatra holds the majority of the remaining critically endangered Sumatran elephant population left in the world, but 80% of this population lives outside of conservation areas in fragmented habitats. This is a recipe for human-elephant conflict, which has only escalated due to the financial difficulties caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic as people look for alternative incomes and rely more on natural resources. Conservation Response Units (CRUs) in Aceh province support human-elephant conflict mitigation, protect habitat, herd wild elephants away from human settlements, and conduct outreach and education.
