Fostering Human-Elephant Coexistence (HECx) Awareness in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India
Human-elephant conflict is a perennial problem in India, with the state of Tamil Nadu recording an extremely high rate of incidents including 35-40 human casualties per year. In 2015 and 2016, IEF supported Zoo Outreach Organization’s teacher training program to spread human-elephant coexistence (HECx) techniques and safety skills to teachers, children and villages. The results were encouraging and communities showed interest in more such education. This project will expand that program of teacher training and school awareness programs to schools near Northern Western Ghats in Erode District.
