Developing strategies to mitigate Human Elephant Conflict using GPS collars as an early warning system in Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia
Human-elephant conflict (HEC) is one of the main threats to the critically endangered Sumatran elephant. This project focuses on advancing management strategies to promote co-existence and the development of wildlife reserves and forest corridors specially designed to fulfill the requirements and needs of both humans and elephants. Using data collected from collared elephants, home ranges and habitat use of elephants in Aceh will be determined followed by the implementation of effective HEC mitigation strategies. The effectiveness of using GPS collars as an early warning system for communities at high risk of HEC is also being evaluated.
