Project Description

Reduction of poisoning of African elephants in Southern Africa, Zimbabwe

African elephants in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa have been targeted by commercial poachers who bait water sources and salt licks with poison. In order to prosecute and convict apprehended suspects, the toxin used must be identified and a quantitative value given to show lethal dose. This project develops toxicological testing in a laboratory in Victoria Falls suitable to be used for prosecution, a service not currently available in Zimbabwe. This project also educates local children about toxins and poaching and helps to foster coexistence. Through prosecuting poachers, treating affected poisoned areas, and deterring poaching through education, elephants and humans in this region will benefit.
