Project Description

Extension of solar powered electric elephant fence to reduce human-elephant conflict in Thuma Forest Reserve and Dedza Salina Escarpment, Malawi

Thuma Forest Reserve and Dedza-Salima Escarpment are the only Forest Reserves left in Malawi that are still home to a large range of mammals including a small but important population of some of the last remaining escarpment elephants in Africa. For communities in this area, crop-raiding creates a significant challenge both in terms of decimating harvests but also psychologically. In order to preserve this key elephant population and foster human elephant coexistence, this project extends the already effective solar powered fence along the boundary of the Thuma Forest Reserve and Dedza-Salima Escarpment and the human-populated communities.
