Strengthen Human Elephant Co-existence in Nepal
With an estimated 205-265 wild elephants in Nepal, securing enough intact forest to sustain that
population while preventing and reducing incidents of human-elephant conflict is a challenge.
This project focuses on human-elephant coexistence (HECx) by working to change human
behavior. Sixteen youth members of HEC prone regions will be trained as Local Resource
Persons (LRPs) on HECx and then mobilized to conduct a series of elephant conservation
education sessions in their communities. A field booklet on HECx will be produced and
distributed to villagers as well. These actions will increase community tolerance towards
elephants and strengthen HECx.
