Rangers are ‘essential’ workers, but due to the economic downturn and collapse of tourism caused by the pandemic, they have suffered drastic pay cuts. Despite this challenge, they are still risking their lives to protect the wildlife we all love! Tourism revenue pays each ranger’s wages but with no tourism, and more people turning to wildlife crime to make ends meet, rangers are needed more than ever.
IEF has supported the recovery of Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) in Uganda for almost ten years funding ranger stations and equipment to protect elephants, lions, pangolin, and the endangered Rothschilds giraffe. But in these dire times, their needs outweigh our funds. You can make a difference for these brave rangers!
On September 18th ranger teams across Africa will compete in The Ranger Challenge, a global fundraising initiative to support the men and women working tirelessly to safeguard the continent’s iconic wildlife. In The Ranger Challenge, they will complete a 21 kilometer (13 miles) race in 4-man teams, carrying equipment packs weighing 22 kilograms (48.5 lbs). This race is symbolic of the patrol work to protect iconic African wildlife they perform every day. IEF will be supporting the 4-man ranger team of Murchison Falls, Uganda.
