Capacity building to strengthen management of captive elephants and Domesticated Elephant Advanced Registration (DEAR), Laos

Knowledge of how to care for elephants in human care is being slowly replaced by modern management techniques thereby improving the living conditions of mahouts working with domesticated elephants, improving technical skills of veterinarians, and developing a nationwide elephant registration process/database. ElefantAsia’s elephant hospital and laboratory provided the Lao PDR with a much-needed center for elephant disease diagnosis, pathology and veterinary care. The provision of better ways of caring for and managing elephants improves the welfare of the elephants and professionalism of the veterinarians. The micro-chipping of the entire domesticated Asian elephant population of Laos helps to monitor the illegal capture of elephants from the wild and the smuggling of elephants to neighboring nations.
