Community-based Protection of Forest Elephants and Habitat Restoration, Cameroon

The Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary is a key target area for forest elephant conservation in Cameroon where it is currently a hotspot of poaching and habitat loss. Using a community approach, village elephant conservation groups have been created and aid in enforcing wildlife law, conducting forest patrols, community outreach, and restoring degraded habitat. Sustainable biodiversity-friendly economic activities are also taught as alternatives to poaching and illegal wildlife harvesting.
