Converting Community Attitudes towards Conservation in Chizarira, Zimbabwe

Elephant populations in Zimbabwe’s Chizarira National Park have declined from 2500 individuals to less than 500 largely due to poaching and human-elephant conflict. Community awareness campaigns on the consequences of poaching and wildlife crime are being implemented, as well as educational programs about conservation utilizing art and establishment of wildlife clubs. This project undertakes community development programs to enhance quality of life and prevent conflict by implementing activities like crop guarding and finding alternative livelihoods for former wildlife criminals.
