EEHV prevalence in semen samples of Asian and African elephants

In order to mitigate the spread of EEHV within the elephant population, researchers are investigating whether EEHV can be transmitted between individual elephants through fresh or frozen semen, and whether the virus can cross- contaminate sperm samples. Although transmission of the virus is presumed to be through trunk secretions, it is still unknown whether EEHV can be transmitted to a recipient cow by exposure to semen from a latently infected or shedding bull. To date, no transmission has been identified but studies are still ongoing.
