Elephant Foot Anatomy and Pathology

Potential causes of ineffective management and treatment of chronic foot lesions include a lack of anatomical knowledge regarding the relationships of structures within the foot, as well as an incomplete understanding of the causative factors and pathogenesis of chronic pododermatitis. This study examined elephant feet with and without chronic foot lesions to determine the relationships between the anatomy and the development of chronic foot lesions. The results of the study aids elephant managers and veterinarians in the prevention and treatment of chronic pododermatitis.
