Community-based action for Human-elephant co-existence in the Ulu Masen Forest, Indonesia

The Ulu Masen Forest in West Aceh makes up 21% of Aceh Province’s 3.5 million hectares of forest is home to globally significant populations of Sumatran Elephant and is directly surrounded, and depended on, by 268,000 people. Working with two villages in this region, this project prevents and mitigates human-elephant conflict by the development and agreement of a Community Strategy for prevention of HEC and a community land-use plan to protect habitat and prevent conflict. Community members are trained to monitor and enforce agricultural land use regulations and also conduct community education. HEC mitigation techniques are also employed to protect existing agricultural sites, while exploring alternative livelihood strategies and alternative crops that are less palatable to elephants.
