Community Based Elephant Conservation in Central Nepal

Nepal has a small but growing population of elephants existing in increasingly human dominated landscapes, creating serious human-elephant conflict (HEC). Habitat fragmentation, retaliatory killings, and inadequate coordination among agencies has created a low level of conservation awareness and increased HEC. To address this issue this project works with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation to strengthen and mobilize Elephant Response Teams to respond to HEC incidents, conduct village-level outreach and education to change attitudes towards elephants, strengthen cooperation between local agencies and stakeholders, and work with local mahouts to increase their capacity and training to increase the welfare of elephants in human care in the region.
