Conflict to Coexistence: Securing Jharkhand-West Bengal Inter- State Elephant Corridor, India

Existing methods of combating human-elephant conflict (HEC) in West Bengal have focused on restricting inter-state elephant migration, which has limited resources to the elephant population and caused further habitat degradation. While the primary focus is to create “safe passage” for elephants and coordinate with forest department officials by removing physical barriers, the local community also benefits through learning alternate livelihoods, crop replacement, and other mitigation techniques lead by the model ‘Early Response Squad.’
