The Bukit Tigapuluh elephants form one of the last remaining viable populations of Sumatran elephants however they are threatened by human- elephant conflict (HEC). In 2010, HEC mitigation and elephant protection and state- of-the-art monitoring techniques activities were implemented. Because of this project, satellite telemetry provided vital information on elephant movements needed to run an Early-Warning-System (EWS), which supported both local communities and professional ranger teams in HEC mitigation.
