Forest Elephant Demographic Assessment, Gabon

While much conservation work has been done in Gabon’s Batéké Plateau National Park and its periphery, it largely focuses on species other than elephants. This project uses camera traps and foot patrols to assess the demographic structure and sex ratio of forest elephants in the region which will help monitor hunting pressure on the population. Patrols also collect samples for genetic testing to be included in Gabon’s national reference DNA database to be used in poaching, ivory, and trafficking cases.
