Human Elephant Coexistence in Selous Niassa Wildlife Corridor, Tanzania

Covering three regions in Tanzania (Ruvuma, Lindi, and Mtwara), the Selous Niassa Wildlife Corridor serves as a crucial pathway for elephant migration between the Selous Game Reserve and Niassa Reserve with an elephant population fluctuating between 15,000 to 30,000 individuals. It is an area of critical focus for elephant habitat, behavior, and coexistence. This project uses camera traps and transects to monitor and document spatial-temporal distribution of elephants within and around the corridor, and quantifies the elephants’ depredation and crop raiding intensity. They also work with communities to implement solutions to enhance human elephant coexistence while raising community engagement with conservation activities through environmental clubs, informational campaigns, and village meetings.
