Mobile Anti-poaching teams of Northern Rangelands Trust Conservancies, Kenya

The northern Ewaso Nyiro Ecosystem in Northern Kenya has the country’s second highest concentration of elephants and one of the highest densities and diversity of wildlife, largely living outside of government protected areas. There is also a high prevalence of illegal firearms and an active network of poachers and road banditry. This project supports the 9-1 and 9-2 Joint Anti-Poaching Teams of Northern Rangelands Trust, the gold standard of community conservancy programs. The continued deployment of these armed rangers helps both wildlife and the communities that comprise the conservancies. Their ongoing efforts have seen the Proportion of Illegally Killed Elephants (PIKE) decrease substantially overtime. The teams also conduct conservation awareness sessions within communities to foster improved land management and community investment in conservation activities.
