A Glimpse of Tsavo’s first 6 Months of 2025
For well over a decade IEF has supported the activities of the Tsavo Trust through the Big Tusker Project, supporting Increased Elephant Security and Monitoring, and other special projects. Over the years, we have observed this impact increase, watched young Emerging Tuskers mature into Big Tuskers, and, although it is sad to see elderly Big Tuskers die of natural causes, this is actually a positive outcome in the ongoing fight against poachers. We recently received an update and we thought the best way to share it with you is to show you:
For the first six months of the year, the aerial reconnaissance unit flew 417 hours covering 53,003 km (average 69.5 hrs and 8,834 km/month). This includes 100 hours and 11,276 km dedicated to rhino-specific flights across Tsavo East and West. This alone is incredible, but the anti-poaching operations resulted in 35 arrests, the dismantling of 51 illegal livestock bomas, and the seizure of 1,225 kg of bushmeat. They removed a total of 433 snares/traps (334 small, 74 medium, 5 large, and 20 bird traps) too!
And there’s still half a year left to go! IEF is proud to support these incredible efforts working together for elephants and all of Tsavo’s wildlife.
