African Forest elephants are unique. Though only recently officially recognized as a distinct species, conservationists have long suspected they are their own special group. With this distinction, we can more carefully focus our efforts to be most effective.
The first step in tailoring actions is to learn. By supporting work in Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary in Cameroon, IEF is learning about migration patterns, habitat use, and herd details using field cameras. We are also seeing other incredible wildlife too!

But those who live alongside wildlife will ultimately make the decisions that will protect them. IEF supported community education sessions including teaching alternative livelihoods with new agricultural techniques, and restoring degraded habitat by establishing a tree nursery.

A multifaceted approach is essential because conservation is not “one size fits all.” Your support is helping us learn valuable information about the incredible forest elephant while helping communities to create long-term conservation benefits.
