Happy Mother’s Day! We think moms are ele-fantastic! They help make the world warmer, happier, safer, and so much more! Today we celebrate ALL MOTHERS, but highlight the incredible roles elephant moms play in our natural world and why it is our responsibility to support them:

M — Matriarchs lead with wisdom that holds families together.
Elephant herds survive because of the strength and knowledge of their matriarchs—experienced mothers and grandmothers who remember every water source, every safe path, every danger. They guide their families through drought, conflict, and uncertainty. They teach calves how to be elephants, how to belong, how to stay safe. When a matriarch is lost, an entire family loses its compass. Protecting her means protecting generations.

O — Ongoing threats put entire herds at risk.
Every day, elephants face dangers that chip away at their future—poaching, human elephant conflict, shrinking and fragmented habitats, and deadly diseases. These pressures don’t just threaten individual animals; they endanger the survival of whole families, whole landscapes, whole generations yet to come.

T — Tusks tell a story of both beauty and vulnerability.
Tusks are simply modified incisor teeth, yet they have cost elephants so much. Both male and female African elephants carry tusks, while only male Asian elephants do—making them targets for ivory poaching. Their tusks should be symbols of strength, not a reason for suffering.

H — Homes are disappearing.
Elephants’ homes—vast, rich habitats—are being carved apart by illegal logging, agriculture, mining, and development. As their space disappears, elephants are pushed into smaller, isolated pockets, increasing conflict with people who are also trying to survive. When elephants lose their homes, they lose their safety, their food, their freedom.

E — Elephants hold ecosystems together.
Elephants are keystone species, meaning entire ecosystems depend on them. They shape forests and savannas, disperse seeds, open pathways, and create water access for countless other species. When elephants thrive, nature thrives. When they disappear, the loss ripples outward in ways we cannot undo.

R — Research saves lives.
Diseases like EEHV strike without warning and can take a young elephant’s life in hours. Research is our strongest defense—giving us the tools to detect, treat, and prevent deadly outbreaks. Every breakthrough helps protect elephants across the globe and gives calves a fighting chance at life.
