Greetings,

Happy World Elephant Day! Not only is today is World Elephant Day but August is Asian Elephant Awareness Month! We have tons to celebrate, literally, but we also have a lot of work to do. All elephants need our help, but did you know that there are ten times fewer Asian elephants left in the world than the African savannah elephant? We live with the real possibility that Asian elephants can go regionally extinct in Vietnam within the next 10 years. We are working every single day to secure a sustainable future for elephants and with your help it will be possible.

World Elephant Day

Every August 12th is World Elephant Day, but for you and I every day is a day to celebrate elephants! Asian, African forest, and African savannah elephants are some of the most inspirational and majestic creatures on this planet. Seeing and learning about elephants helps us improve our understanding of our world and inspires us to take actions to protect it.

Elephants play many important roles beyond their obvious majestic presence. They are ‘ecosystem engineers’ helping to shape, modify, and maintain their habitat through their actions. They are a ‘keystone species’ meaning their presence in an ecosystem serves to define that ecosystem to the point where their absence would dramatically change or even destroy it. And they are an ‘umbrella species’ whereby actions taken to protect them have a positive, protective effect on all other species who share their habitat.

As you can see, elephants are a big deal. They deserve their own day to celebrate. Together we celebrate them, and together we can make sure there are always elephants to celebrate.

Next Week! 18th International Elephant Conservation & Research Symposium

The 18th International Elephant Conservation & Research Symposium is less than a week away! This is a can’t miss event connecting you with the latest in elephant research, conservation, and field work.

Starting this Monday, the symposium will kick off with a keynote address from world-renowned veterinarian, elephant fertility specialist, and conservationist Dr. Dennis Schmitt.

For the second year in a row we are holding it virtually, making it accessible to anyone from anywhere!

When: August 15-19, 2022
Time: 5am-9am PST
Cost: $35

This year we are also offering an Official Certificate of Completion to demonstrate professional development for participating and attending this important event. For an additional fee you will receive a personalized certificate after the week’s talks are complete.

A Legacy for Elephants

Did you know that besides being Asian Elephant Awareness Month August is also National Make-A-Will Month? This makes it the perfect time to discuss the benefits of estate planning for you, your loved ones, and the causes you care about.

Take this time to leave a legacy in your will for elephants, protecting them for years to come. In addition to wills there are many other ways to support elephants, including gifts of stock and directing your Donor Advised Funds. Giving in these ways can help with next year’s taxes while making a bigger impact protecting the elephants we love. We’re always here to help guide you through the process.
