IEF joins global elephant conservationists, advocates and friends in expressing sadness for the passing of Richard Lair, the elephant conductor. Richard was an enduring presence in elephant care and culture in Thailand. As an author, both his book, “Gone Astray”, focusing on elephant conservation and the “Elephant Care Manual for Mahouts and Camp Managers”, that he co-published in Thai and English, are highly regarded to this day.
Alongside American musician and neuroscientist Dave Soldier, Richard co-created the famous Thai Elephant Orchestra at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. This musical ensemble consisted of up to 14 Thai elephants near Lampang (Northern Thailand) who played specially designed, durable versions of traditional Thai instruments as well as drums and harmonica. The elephant musicians performed with gusto, both delighting and educating the public and generating funds for the care of retired working elephants.
While he conducted the world’s most unique orchestra, Richard Lair was really conducting the global community in developing a deeper connection and appreciation for elephants. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed.
