This year the International Elephant Foundation was able to support 24 projects in 15 countries, including three on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Sumatra is home to the critically endangered Sumatran elephant and there are an estimated 1500 individuals left in the wild. They share their habitat with other incredible species like the critically endangered Sumatran rhino, Sumatran tiger, sun bear, pangolin, tapir, and a multitude of bird and reptile species.

The Ulu Masen Forest in West Aceh is home to many globally significant species, but is surrounded by 268,000 people in multiple communities.

Your support of IEF enabled focused community outreach to help prevent conflict and protect the vital habitat.

Villages worked to develop a Community Strategy approved by the government district.

They also conducted important land use surveys, taught human-elephant conflict mitigation strategies, and even implemented alternative crops to make the crops grown by local farmers less palatable to elephants.

There is a ton more work to be done in Sumatra. Community outreach and education is just one piece of the dynamic conservation puzzle.

IEF has made a long-term commitment to elephants, and we will continue this work until it is no longer needed. But we need you to make that happen. Right now, through the end of the year, you can DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT FOR ELEPHANTS! A generous donor has offered to match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. Won’t you please help us continue this great work?
